Exploring Mars: The Red Planet's Renaissance
• NASA's Perseverance rover, landed on Mars in February 2021, is on a mission to search for signs of ancient microbial life. It's also collecting rock and soil samples for potential return to Earth.
The small helicopter, Ingenuity, made history by becoming the first powered aircraft to fly on another planet. It has been assisting Perseverance in its exploration.
Curiosity Rover, still active after more than a decade on Mars, is exploring Gale Crater, a location chosen for its potential to reveal the planet's past habitability.
Lunar Ambitions: Returning to the Moon
• Artemis Program
NASA's Artemis program aims to establish a sustainable human presence on the Moon by the end of the decade. Artemis I, an uncrewed test flight of the Space Launch System rocket and Orion spacecraft, was a successful launch in 2022.
• Chandrayaan-3
Also India's Chandrayaan-3 successfully landed on the Moon's south pole in August 2023, making India the fourth country to achieve this feat.
Beyond Our Solar System: Interplanetary Explorers
• Parker Solar Probe is making history by studying the Sun's outer atmosphere, the corona. It has made multiple close flybys of the Sun, providing unprecedented insights into its behavior.
• New Horizons, after its historic flyby of Pluto in 2015, is exploring the Kuiper Belt, a region beyond Neptune. It recently made a close encounter with a Kuiper Belt object named Arrokoth.
• Voyager 1 and 2, launched in the 1970s, have ventured far beyond our solar system. They are now exploring interstellar space, providing valuable data about the heliosphere.
Other Notable Missions
• The James Webb Space Telescope, launched in 2021, is designed to observe the universe in infrared light. It has already made significant discoveries, including the detection of water vapor in the atmosphere of an exoplanet.
• NASA's Europa Clipper mission is scheduled to launch in the mid-2020s to explore Jupiter's moon Europa, a potential target for searching for extraterrestrial life.
• The ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter is searching for signs of life on Mars by studying the planet's atmosphere.
• ISRO's Aditya-L1, India's mission launched in September 2023,is headed towards the L1 Lagrange point to study the Sun's corona and its influence on space weather.
